Expressive Figure Drawing Workshop:

create with emotion

Step away from the constraints of perfection and tap into the raw power of emotion through the Expressive Figure Drawing workshop at the Pacific Northwest Art Laboratory. This transformative experience is tailored for artists of all skill levels who want to explore figure drawing in a more visceral and personal way. Over six sessions, you’ll develop and perfect your figure-drawing techniques while delving into the emotional and intuitive aspects of the creative process.

Guided by instructors with backgrounds in fine art and art therapy, you’ll learn to draw from the heart—expressing not only the physical form but also the internal landscape of the figure. This workshop prioritizes emotion over exact likeness and process over perfection, allowing you to experiment, push boundaries, and discover new dimensions of your artistry.

Ideal For:

- Artists at any skill level looking to break free from technical constraints and focus on emotional expression.

- Those interested in exploring figure drawing in a new, innovative way.

- Anyone curious about integrating art therapy principles into their creative practice.

What To Expect:

- Live Model Sessions: Each class includes three hours of live model time, featuring a mix of long and short poses designed to enhance your observational skills and ability to capture emotion in the figure.

- Emotional Exploration: Drawing is not just about what you see but how you feel. We’ll integrate art therapy techniques throughout each session, guiding you to tap into your emotions and express them on the page.

- Material Exploration: Experiment with various materials, including charcoal, pencil, and ink, to voice your creativity. Play with different tools and textures to discover innovative ways to convey mood and movement.

- Skill-Building Exercises: Alongside live drawing, you’ll engage in specialized exercises designed to free up your creative process, enhance your mark-making, and deepen your understanding of human anatomy in expressive terms.

- Peer Reviews & Professional Critiques: Receive constructive feedback from peers and instructors. In a supportive group environment, you’ll feel empowered to take risks, learn from others, and grow your artistic practice.

- Final Project: The workshop will culminate in creating a final piece using charcoal, pencil, or ink, reflecting your journey throughout the course. This project will unify all the skills and emotional exploration you’ve experienced.

The workshop fee includes all required materials for the course (drawing papers, pencils, charcoal, ink, etc.), allowing you to focus entirely on your creative expression.

Light snacks and refreshments will be available throughout the day to energize and inspire you.
